Round Trip Time (RTT)
The Van Jacobean round trip time calculation algorithm is used to calculate the average time for data to be acknowledged. When a data packet is sent, the elapsed time for the acknowledgment to arrive is measured and the Van Jacobean mean deviation algorithm is applied. This time is used to determine the interval to retransmit data. Karns algorithm specifies that retransmitted packets should not be used in this calculation since it is impossible to know if the acknowledgment is from the original packet or from a retransmitted packet.
